Rights and Responsibilities of Mental Patients in The 1800s
My partner and I took a long amount of time to decide on our topic. We had to do a little research to find the perfect topic for our project. We even went on the NHD website for inspiration. And after some careful consideration my partner and I decided on the topic of mental patients and hospitals as it greatly sparked our interests. We believed that a lot could be learned about how mental patients were treated, primarily in the eighteen hundreds. My partner and I chose the 1800s as that was around the time many mental hospitals were opening and being run, not to mention the large amount of maltreatment of the patients at this time in history.
My partner and I collected all of our research over time, as our project continued to progress we found more and more information. One of the first things we did once we decided on our topic was begin to research for our project. We spent a lot of time in class collecting information and searching for anything that could help us improve our project. My partner and I also spent a lot of time at home, looking for both primary and secondary sources alike. I know that we spent countless hours trying to gain more information and knowledge about our topic. We did what we could, each of us searching for more sources about our topic.
We selected our presentation category after only a few days of consideration. There were other presentation options we were also considering. But in the end we did in fact decide to do the category of a website. My partner and I rationalized that this would be the best option as it was fairly easy to manage, but could also be well done if enough effort was put in. After choosing our category and gathering information my partner and I created our website using a site creator called Weebly. Setting it up was no trouble at all as we both had experience with making websites. The only real troubles came with the decision of organization, where to put all of our information.
I believe that our project relates to the NHD topic extremely well. Our project is on how the mental patients in the 1800s were treated terribly and given absolutely no say to what happened to them. People back then would be deemed crazy and then immediately stripped of their rights. It was unfair how horribly the patients were treated, even though they were free citizens and did not deserve to be treated in such a way. There were also the responsibility of the people in that time period, who did absolutely nothing to help those that were being stripped of their rights. The doctors and nurses refused to believe what they were doing was wrong, which hurt many people in the process.
