One cannot forget about the medical staff. They had a responsibility to their patients, professions, and even to the general public. The medical professionals in the 1800s were expected to fairly and correctly diagnose, treat, and help their patients. Unfortunately that is not what happened. The medical staff, when presented with a problem simply took the easy way out and did not use their training or their minds. Doctors and nurses, although not equipped with modern day medicine, still could have been kind to those with mental illnesses and created a good environment. But instead they created hospitals filled with, too many patients, unsanitary conditions, misdiagnosed patients, and even people who never deserved to be there in the first place. The medical staff in mental institutions in the 1800s had the responsibility to uphold the honor and truth of medicine, but instead they ruined the practice with unsafe measures and practices.
